ISO 50001 and BAFA funding: benefit twice with empAI

Effective energy management under ISO 50001 stands or falls with reliable data – and digitalising it is subsidised by BAFA with up to 45%. Learn how empAI, as an eligible software solution (EEW, Module 3), connects energy, production and environmental data and helps companies turn regulatory requirements into a strategic advantage.

ISO 50001 and BAFA funding: how companies benefit twice from energy data management

Rising energy costs, increasing regulatory pressure and ambitious climate targets present industrial companies with a wide range of challenges. At the same time, customers, partners and legislators are increasingly demanding reliable evidence of energy efficiency and CO₂ emissions. Many companies therefore want to develop their energy management further.

But how can the necessary investments be implemented economically while achieving lasting improvements in operations?

This is exactly where two opportunities come together: powerful energy data management as the basis for effective energy management, and funding programmes such as BAFA support for digital solutions.

Why energy data management is crucial today

An energy management system under ISO 50001 depends on reliable data. Energy consumption must be continuously recorded, analysed, evaluated and documented. In practice, however, this information is often spread across different systems – from energy meters and IoT sensors to ERP and MES systems and production plants.

The challenge therefore is not to generate more data, but to meaningfully connect existing information and derive sound decisions from it. Because certification alone doesn't save a single kilowatt hour. Measurable economic value only emerges once energy data becomes transparent and continuously feeds into optimisation measures.

What is ISO 50001 about?

It is based on the PDCA cycle (Plan – Do – Check – Act): energy consumption is analysed, measures are derived and implemented, and their effectiveness is reviewed regularly. A certified energy management system helps companies meet legal requirements, systematically tap energy savings potential and provide reliable evidence for ESG reports, customer requirements and internal optimisation processes.

Important: It is the company's energy management system that is certified – not the software used.

BAFA funding: implementing digitalisation economically

To support companies in introducing and digitalising their energy management, Germany's Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) subsidises corresponding investments under the Federal Funding for Energy and Resource Efficiency in the Economy (EEW). Funding covers, among other things, digital solutions for energy and environmental management systems and the metering technology required to record and analyse energy flows.

Depending on company size, up to 45 percent of eligible investment costs can be subsidised. This allows companies to digitalise their energy management more economically and benefit from efficiency potential more quickly.

How empAI supports companies

Effective energy management under ISO 50001 needs one thing above all: a reliable, connected data foundation.

As a platform for energy data management, empAI connects energy, production and environmental data from different sources and creates a central information base for sound decisions. Instead of replacing existing ERP, MES, SCADA or IoT systems, the platform combines their data into a central information base. A digital twin of the energy landscape creates transparency about consumption, relationships and optimisation opportunities.

Key functions include:

  • integration of a wide range of data sources such as energy meters, IoT sensors, ERP, MES and SCADA systems
  • continuous recording and analysis of energy consumption
  • AI-supported identification of optimisation potential
  • structured planning, documentation and tracking of improvement measures
  • provision of reliable energy and CO₂ data for reporting and audits

empAI thus creates the data foundation for sound decisions in energy management and helps companies implement the requirements of ISO 50001 efficiently and sustainably.

In addition, empAI is included in the BAFA list of eligible software solutions under Module 3 of the Federal Funding for Energy and Resource Efficiency in the Economy (EEW). This means the use of empAI can be supported as part of a funded digitalisation project in the field of energy management. Actual eligibility depends on the specific project and the individual funding requirements.

Why now is the right time

Requirements for companies keep increasing. Energy costs remain volatile, regulatory requirements are growing, and sustainability evidence is increasingly becoming a prerequisite in supply chains and tenders. Funding programmes such as BAFA funding offer attractive opportunities to implement investments in modern energy management economically.

Companies that invest in a powerful energy data management platform today not only lay the foundation for a certifiable energy management system. They also increase their transparency, tap savings potential and improve their long-term competitiveness.

Conclusion: technology that pays off

With empAI, companies get an energy data management platform that brings together energy, production and environmental data, reveals optimisation potential and supports the continuous improvement process. This turns a regulatory requirement into a strategic advantage – economically, sustainably and with additional financial support through BAFA funding.

ISO 50001 defines the organisational framework for systematic energy management. The decisive success factor, however, lies in the quality and availability of the underlying data.
